The tiny St Mary's Island is just north of Whitley Bay on the North East coast of England. Sadly I didn't get the time to walk across to the island, but at least I was able to capture the above photograph from Whitley Bay. The lighthouse no longer functions as a working lighthouse, but is open to visitors and has a small museum, a visitor's centre and a cafe. It was built in 1898 on the site of a monastery.
